The Outer Banks, NC: A Thin Strip of Sand with a Big Soul

The Outer Banks is a strange and wonderful stretch of the Carolina coast, a thin ribbon of barrier islands sitting out in the Atlantic, holding on against the wind and waves one storm at a time. It's been that way for centuries, and the people who love it wouldn't have it any other way.

Long before surf shops and beach rentals, these islands were home to the Lost Colony of Roanoke, English settlers who vanished without a trace in the 1580s, and to Blackbeard himself, who met his end just offshore near Ocracoke in 1718. Few stretches of American coastline carry that much history in so few miles.

From the wild horses roaming free on Corolla's northern beaches, to the towering dunes at Jockey's Ridge, to the surf towns like Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills where the Wright Brothers first took flight, the OBX has a little bit of everything. It's lighthouses and fishing piers, soundside sunsets and oceanside sunrises, and a pace of life that slows down the second you cross the bridge.

It's also become its own kind of cultural touchstone thanks to a certain TV show, but longtime OBX folks will tell you the real story was always here: generations of families who've fished these waters, built these towns, and ridden out hurricanes to keep calling this strip of sand home.

If the Outer Banks is your happy place, or your home, take a piece of it with you in our Outer Banks North Carolina Pocket T-Shirt, built for salt air, sandy trucks, and everywhere else you wear your Carolina pride. And if you're all about that Pogue Life, check out our Carolina Forever — POGUE T-Shirt too.

Shade yourself at the beach with our Carolina Headwear - NC Patch hat, the easiest way to keep the sun off and the Carolina pride on.

Got an OBX memory worth sharing? We'd love to hear it.

Three places to explore on the Outer Banks

There's more than one way to get to know the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Make room for aviation history and two lighthouse stops, but plan them as a driving outing rather than a walk between neighbors.

  • Wright Brothers National Memorial: Start with the visitor center and museum's interactive exhibits, then check the day's ranger programs for another way into the brothers' story. It's a chance to put the coast's flight history alongside its fishing and maritime traditions.
  • Bodie Island Lighthouse: This lighthouse offers seasonal, self-guided climbs. With just over 200 steps and no elevator, the climb is strenuous; check the National Park Service's ticket, height, and safety requirements before making it part of your day.
  • Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Make this a stop for the lighthouse's outdoor setting, not a promised climb. The tower is closed to climbing throughout 2026 for restoration, while outdoor areas near it remain open.

Check Wright Brothers National Memorial's visitor activities and the current lighthouse visitor guidance before going. Climbing access is seasonal and weather-dependent.
